Dialing internationally

Your phone must be set to allow international calling, so if this does not work please contact the CTS helpdesk at [email protected] or x4500 to request that international calling be enabled on your extension.

To make an international call, dial 011 country code phone number

In the example above, "9" tells the phone it is an off campus call. 011 tells the phone that it will be routing outside the US. The country code tells the phone which country it is dialing. And finally, the phone number (sometimes preceded by the area code) tells the phone which exact phone it should be opening communication with

For instance, the country code for Zimbabwe is 263. The user would dial 9 + 011 + 263 + phone number.

A list of country codes can be found at www.howtocallabroad.com

Two more important tips from the above website:

If the international number you wish to call starts with a 0 (zero), you must drop this digit when dialing the number. The 0 (zero) is a so called "trunk code" used for domestic calls within many countries.

The plus sign used before an international telephone number can either be dialed or replaced with your country's exit code. For example, if you are in the US and you see this UK number +44 7000 000 000 you can dial it as is or replace the plus sign with 011.

Want to do a test call? As of 2021-10-06, Keflavik Airport in Iceland answers with an auto attendant (machine). The number to dial is 9 011 354 425 6000.
